Research background
Bacteriostatic water is not an active compound: it is water for injection with 0.9% benzyl alcohol added as a preservative. That preservative is what sets it apart from plain sterile water, and what allows the same vial to be pierced several times without anything growing inside it.
In work with lyophilized peptides it is the standard solvent for exactly that reason: a vial is rarely used up in a single withdrawal. It is worth keeping in mind that benzyl alcohol is not inert for every assay, nor compatible with every preparation, so the solvent should be chosen to suit the experimental design rather than out of habit.
Handling
- Disinfect the stopper with an alcohol wipe before every withdrawal.
- Withdraw only the volume you are going to use, always with a fresh sterile needle and syringe.
- The 0.9% benzyl alcohol is what lets the same vial be pierced several times without it becoming contaminated.
Storage and stability
- In a cool place, protected from light. Unopened, it does not need refrigeration.
- Once the vial has been pierced, use it within the following 28 days.
